March BeeBox – VHCO

Hello friends!  Today I am insanely excited to show you all my new Greenstyle Creations Scarlet Swing Dress – featuring the March BeeBox fabric from Vinegar and Honey Co.!

I’m seriously feeling the summer vibes.  Too bad it was 35 degrees out and crazy windy by the lake!  Brian had it after about 10 minutes, but thankfully he’s really great with the camera so we managed to get quite a few good shots.  You can totally tell I’m freezing in some of them, haha.  But anyway, we’re going to Punta Cana this spring so I wanted to get a head start on sewing up some beachy pieces and this was just the thing!

The awesome tie dye print definitely needed to be a dress, in my opinion.  Speaking of the fabric, Vinegar and Honey Co. does this pretty sweet thing where you subscribe to a monthly “BeeBox” of fabric (2 yards), and then they send them all out to everyone on the same day.  No one knows what it will be and everyone gets the same fabric, then we all sew up stuff together in their Facebook group!  Definitely join the fun if you haven’t already.

This particular piece is spun poly.  Its’s kinda hard to tell from my windy pictures, but it has an awesome drape!  It’s lightweight and breathable for summer, stretchy, and vibrant.  It’s a little bit fiddly when laying it out or folding it, but it sews up really nicely.  I’m going to keep an eye out for more in the future for sure.

For my pattern, I used the Greenstyle Creations Scarlet Swing Dress.  This is the short sleeve, high-low short dress option.  I’ve had my eye on this one for a little bit, and as soon as I saw the fabric I knew it should be a swing dress of some kind.  I know I probably could have achieved a similar look by mashing patterns I already owned, but I wanted to try out a new one and see how it went.  Overall, I really like this one.  I wasn’t sure if it would be super flattering since it has a ton of “swing”, but the drape of the fabric helps a lot and I like the results.  The instructions are clear and simple.  I’ll certainly make more.

The one thing is the instructions specified to choose your size based on your bust measurement, which put me squarely in a size small.  I’ve never been a small in my entire life, so I thought that was odd, but I made the small anyway.  The shoulders are a touch tight, so I will probably make the medium (my usual RTW size) next time, grading back down to the small at the bust.  I do have somewhat wide shoulders and am 5’8″ so I think I should have gone with my gut here instead, but it’s only a little bit noticeable to me.  Certainly won’t stop me from wearing it and loving it!

All in all, it’s a win for this one.  Now, can summer please come to Chicago?  Or at the very least spring?!?!

Sewingly,

Elisabeth
